How Long Is a Grand Canyon Day Trip from Las Vegas?
How long a Grand Canyon day trip from Las Vegas takes: 10 hours by coach, 9 to 13 in a small group, 7 by plane, 4.5 by helicopter, 14 to the South Rim, and the hours at the rim.
About 10 hours by coach to the West Rim, 9 to 13 hours in a small-group van, 7 hours by plane, 4.5 hours by helicopter, and 14 hours by coach to the South Rim. Most of a road day is the road: the West Rim is about 122 miles from the Strip, the South Rim about 275. The plane day gives you the most time at the canyon for the fewest hours, the helicopter the shortest day. The coach day in the calendar below, Comedy on Deck Tours’ Vegas: Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Skywalk Option, & Two Meals, takes 10 hours with three at the West Rim and shows from $99 (checked November 2026), the option without the Skywalk on Saturdays from May 2027; on every earlier date we read it was $179 per adult (checked November 2026).
The coach day starts at 6:30 am, and free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.

Everything except the South Rim day goes to the West Rim, the part of the canyon nearest Las Vegas, on the Hualapai reservation.
By coach: 10 hours, 3 at the canyon

The National Park Service puts the drive from the centre of Las Vegas to the West Rim at 122 miles, about 2 hours 15 minutes, down US-93 to Pierce Ferry Road and Diamond Bar Road. A coach adds its stops. Comedy on Deck Tours’ day spends 45 minutes at breakfast, 45 minutes on a photo stop at Hoover Dam and 15 minutes in Arizona’s Joshua tree forest, and gives the West Rim three hours, an hour each of them at Eagle Point and at Guano Point, where lunch is served. With the pick-ups and drop-offs at seven hotels, that makes 10 hours.

The coach is the cheapest way to the canyon with someone else driving, and it is the only one of these that includes two meals. For most people with one free day in Las Vegas, it is the right trip.
In a small group: 9 to 13 hours
A van of a dozen or so takes about as long as the coach, and often longer, because the small groups add stops: the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, a desert art installation of stacked painted boulders, a walk across the top of Hoover Dam rather than a photo from the bridge. Grand Adventures Tours’ day takes 12 hours with a guide who walks with you at Eagle Point and Guano Point, and includes breakfast, a picnic lunch and the Skywalk pass.
On Viator, four small groups run the same road at different hours:
| Small group on Viator | Starts | How long | Group | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast, a walk on the dam | 06:10 | 11 to 12 hours | 13 at most | $208; $238 with the Skywalk |
| High-roof van, a walk on the dam | 07:00 | 12 to 13 hours | Small group | $214.99; $252.98 with the Skywalk and lunch |
| Mercedes van, Skywalk and lunch included | 07:00 | 10 hours | 14 seats | $249 |
| Late start, Skywalk included | 11:00 | 9 hours | 14 at most | $209.99; lunch not included |
Adult prices per person from each product’s Viator schedule, checked November 2026. MaxTour runs the high-roof van and the late start; its prices change by the week and these are for mid-November 2026; the late-start day cost more in the week from 16 November.
The late start is the one to know about if 6:30 am does not suit you: MaxTour collects you at 11:00 and has you back nine hours later. None of these four includes the Hoover Dam Power Plant Tour; three of them say so in their exclusions.
By plane: 7 hours, about 4 at the canyon
Grand Canyon Airlines collects you from a Las Vegas hotel, once you have arranged the pick-up with them, and drives you about 45 minutes to its terminal in Boulder City. The flight to the West Rim takes about 35 minutes each way, over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, and you then have about four hours on the ground, with a hop-on hop-off shuttle to Eagle Point and Guano Point. Park entrance is included; the Skywalk is an upgrade that comes with a box lunch, and otherwise food is yours to buy at the canyon. Passengers of 300 lb or more buy a second seat.
Its flightseeing tour is a different thing: 70 minutes in the air over the West Rim, four hours in all, and no landing.
By helicopter: 4.5 hours, about 30 minutes in the canyon
Papillon’s landing tour is the shortest day. A transfer takes you about 45 minutes to Boulder City, the helicopter flies about 35 minutes each way over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, and it lands on the canyon floor near the Colorado River for about 30 minutes, with champagne and a light picnic. It is not suitable for people with epilepsy, motion sickness or mobility impairments, and passengers of 300 lb or more buy a second seat. You do not visit the West Rim viewpoints on this tour; you see the canyon from the air and from the floor.
Maverick sells a similar landing on Viator, its Deluxe Helicopter Tour with Landing, at $552.12 for the 07:00 flight (checked November 2026); it has no hotel transfer. For helicopter tours in more depth, grandcanyonheli.tours compares the flights from Las Vegas on their own.
